Captain Hahn's Statue Refurbishment

Background

In 1839 Danish Captain Dirk Meinerts Hahn (1804-1860) brought a shipload of refugees from Prussia to South Australia. Originally settling in Klemzig, Captain Hahn helped them find more arable lands in the Adelaide Hills, in the now famous town of Hahndorf. The town is named Hahndorf, meaning Hahn’s village, in his honour.

The memorial to this historic figure, located in the Pioneer Memorial Gardens, is sadly showing signs of wear and tear. The Hahndorf Community Association, in collaboration with the Mount Barker Council, is planning to refurbish this iconic Hahndorf landmark.

The plinth behind his statue is also needing some refurbishment. The HCA also hopes to commission a model replica of the ship he captained, the Zebra, and place it on the second plinth.

Update March 2026

In mid March 2026 the Mount barker Council began the demolition of the old plinth. The new plinth will be reconstructed between March and July 2026 with Waikerie stone – the choice most preferred by Hahndorf residents.

The bronze bust of Captian Hahn was also removed for renovation.
