Hahndorf Band Festival

Every year the Hahndorf Band Festival is held in the Pioneer Memorial Gardens in Hahndorf. And 2026 will be a very special event as it’s the 100th birthday 🎉 of the Hahndorf Town Band.

Bands from all over Adelaide gather to provide entertainment to residents and visitors alike.

Starting at 9:30am, bands each perform 30 minute sessions.

There is music, market stalls, raffles and sausage sizzles, all creating a vibrant community event that helps promote live music in South Australia.

Christmas Markets

All year round the town of Hahndorf has a festive Christmas feel, with lights in shop windows and a year-round Christmas shop. But in December each year, it becomes the ‘Hahndorf Christmas Village’.

Sadly, this year we no longer have the Christkindlmarkt – a vibrant and popular event held at the C3 Church on the main street of Hahndorf.

However….since 2018, the Gathered Christmas Market has also been held in the laneway  at 102 Mount Barker Road. This year, from the 12th to 14th of December,  it will be moving to a bigger location in Alec Johnston Park, in the heart of Hahndorf.

With stalls selling unique handcrafted gifts, food stalls and live music, the event always attracts visitors to our town to enjoy the festive season in Hahndorf.

Visitors and locals alike, can also enjoy the amazing street decorations created by the ‘Christmas Re-Imagined’ project – run by a group of dedicated volunteers from Hahndorf who have given their time and artistic skills to bring the street to life this Christmas.

Pioneer Women's Trail Walk

Every year hundreds of people follow the path of the women first settlers in Hahndorf.

In 1839, women would walk through bushland carrying baskets of vegetables and dairy produce  to sell to settlers in Adelaide. They left at midnight, walking in the evenings to prevent spoilage of the produce in the hot sun. Often barefoot, they walked 25 km to Beaumont, rested and continued their walk to the town centre, a walk of 35km in all. On their return journey, they would carry supplies for their growing township, including sewing thread, needles, tea, sugar, tobacco and 2 bricks each to build the first Lutheran Church in Hahndorf.

Meanwhile, the men stayed behind, clearing the land and  building the township of Hanndorf.

In 1980 the Hahndorf Branch of the National Trust of South Australia produced a map based on F R Nixon’s survey of the original trail. The first walk took place on 20 April 1980 as part of the National Trust’s Silver Jubilee celebrations. Only expecting a handful of keen walkers, they were surprised when over 150 people turned up! Since then, numbers have grown each year. Walkers now end their trek at Beaumont House, arriving to a festive welcome with food stalls, wine, cider and coffee, accompanied by live music.

Today the remarkable journey is commemorated annually with a walk from the Hahndorf Academy at 68 Main Street, to Beaumont, with options for walkers of all fitness levels to travel part or all of the journey.

In 2026 it will be held on Sunday 17th May, starting at 7:30am. Entrants can complete part or all of the trail, so it’s suitable for all fitness levels. Find out how to enter on the National Trust website.
