There is a little known historic plaque embedded in the trunk of a  gum tree in Hahndorf

The plaque was unveiled by the Hon. David Wotton, Minister for the Environment, on the 8th October 1999, on what would have been Hans Heysen’s 122nd birthday.

The plaque recognised Heysen’s dedicated conservation  efforts. To preserve the majestic gum trees lining Ambleside Road, he purchased timber rights on the trees to prevent them being cut down to make way for residential development. This tree is believed to be one of the trees he saved.

He wished to leave the trees intact so that local children walking to and from school would always be able to enjoy the natural beauty of the Adelaide Hills landscape.
